چکیده

The promise of high-gradient accelerator research is a future for physics beyond the 5-TeV energy scale. Looking beyond what can be engineered today, we examine basic research directions for colliders of the future, from mm-waves to lasers, and from solid-state to plasmas, with attention to material damage, beamdynamics, a workable collision scheme, and energetics.

Final Report on the Advanced Acceleration Techniques Working Group , T 8

There is a small but vigorous community working on advanced accelerator concepts in the United States. This effort, principally supported by the DOE, is deemed important for the long term vitality of High Energy Physics (HEP). In addition, the program contributes essential technology and accelerator science to the benefit of all fields using accelerators in their research. Although the research...

A Solid State Accelerator

We present a solid state accelerator concept utilizing particle acceleration along crystal channels by longitudinal electron plasma waves in a metal. Acceleration gradients of order 100 GV/cm are theoretically possible, but channeling radiation limits the maximum attainable energy to lo5 TeV for protons. Beam dechanneling due to multiple scattering is substantially reduced by the high accelerat...

Optical Damage Threshold of Silicon for Ultrafast Infrared Pulses

While silicon has several properties making it an attractive material for structure-based laser-driven acceleration, its optical damage threshold, a key parameter for high-gradient acceleration, has been unknown. Here we present measurements of the optical damage threshold of crystalline silicon for ultrafast pulses in the mid-infrared. The wavelengths tested span a range from the telecommunica...

Summary Report of Working Group 3: High Gradient and Laser-Structure Based Acceleration

The charge for the working group on high gradient and laser-structure based acceleration was to assess the current challenges involved in developing an advanced accelerator based on electromagnetic structures, and survey stateof-the-art methods to address those challenges. The topics of more than 50 presentations in the working group covered a very broad range of issues, from ideas, theoretical...

Proposal for a One GeV Plasma Wake eld Acceleration Experiment at SLAC

A plasma-based wake eld acceleration experiment E-157 has been approved at SLAC to study acceleration of parts of an SLC bunch by up to 1 GeV/m over a length of 1 m. A single SLC bunch is used to both induce wake elds in the one meter long plasma and to witness the resulting beam acceleration. The experiment will explore and further develop the techniques that are needed to apply high-gradient ...
